‘Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?’
William Shakespeare – Twelfth Night (Act 2, Scene 3)
If ever we needed a Shakespeare-esque reminder that life isn’t all cakes and ale, we’ve certainly had it of late haven’t we. Living in fear of pestilence, people from the Elizabethan era would certainly have identified with the dread of the pandemic we find ourselves in, although admittedly much of the similarities between our lives and theirs end there.
For instance, did you know that the folks of 16th century England drank more ale than water? In those times it was also customary to reserve the best bed in the house for guests and – with good beds in some cases equating to the value of a small house – it hints at the value the Elizabethan’s placed on hospitality and, indeed, good sleep.
