What’s the appeal of a designer label?
Designer labels are often seen as exotic, alluring and aspirational but, other than their marketing, what is it that makes people spend out so much more for the designer label price tags?
In reality there’s often three things that set designer goods apart from cheaper mass-produced products.
- Better quality materials
There’s an old saying that you ‘can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear’ which is to say that if you want to make something truly refined, you have to use refined materials i.e. satin may have the appearance of silk from a distance, but the difference up close is apparent even to the untrained eye.
- More consideration for durability
The design and production of fast fashion and other ‘disposable’ low cost products rarely makes consideration for product durability beyond the manufacturer’s or retailer’s warranty guarantees. Whereas people who buy from designers believe it’s worth paying more for a product that will last longer.
- Dedication to perfection
Only a designer will often care enough about their creation to put the attention to detail and quality into the finish of their product that sets the finished apart from being something acceptable, to something truly special.
