For the past two years Millbrook Beds has dedicated itself to change, committing to fundamental changes in our mattress design to address the volume of mattresses going to landfill figures. The changes we’ve made have been robust and comprehensive:

We’ve addressed not only how a mattress is made and what it is made from, but also the end of life of the mattress and how it is recycled.  

We wanted to find a better mattress solution; better for our customers and better for our planet. Our focus has been on prioritising end-of-life recycling at the very early stages of new product development. To produce a mattress which is more sustainable, we looked at the process from end-of-life beginning. 

Investing in considerable research and development, we designed a mattress technology that factored end-of-life into the genesis of its design. The result is NemoFlex™, a manufacturing and materials innovation technology enabling a mattress to be de-constructed in under five minutes, achieving 100% recycling capability.

At the heart of a mattress lies the NemoFlex™ Core, a revolutionary encapsulated spring system which eliminates components that have traditionally been problematic for recycling. The spring unit has also been designed for easy removal. These design attributes mean that NemoFlex™ is 100% recyclable at its end-of-life. Furthermore, it can be up-cycled into alternative products such as loft insulation, helping to reduce the number of mattresses going to landfill each year.

To support the recycling of all NemoFlex™ mattresses, Millbrook Recycling will be launching at our Totton Headquarters in 2022 to facilitate the end-of-life management.  We’ve worked closely with our suppliers to create processes which allow us to return components to their original source, diverting 100% of the mattresses processed from landfill and reusing and repurposing valuable material.
