Men of the moment, part II

This week at Millbrook Beds we’ve given our blog over to focusing on sleep in the context of men’s health and wellbeing.

Beginning in part one, we looked at research revealing the effect poor sleep has on how men feel and, here in part two, we’re thinking about a very specific sleep problem that’s more prevalent in men than in women.

We’re thinking about sleep apnoea.

If you’ve never heard of it, sleep apnoea is a condition that causes your breathing to stop and start while you sleep. The sleep disturbance associated with sleep apnoea can generally cause snoring, daytime fatigue and other fatigue-related problems but, in severe cases, it can also be associated with increased risk of depression, high blood pressure or even a stroke.

Scientists believe sleep apnoea is linked to testosterone levels and that’s why it effects more men than women.

If you think you may have sleep apnoea, speak to your GP. In mild cases, side sleeping and losing weight can resolve the issue but it’s worth talking it through with a health professional.
