Milk it

Today’s a day to raise a glass – of milk. Yes today (1st June) is World Milk Day, established by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations twenty years ago, and it’s a day in which organisers invite you to share your love for milk by raising a glass to better days.

And, when we think of milky drinks, for many it has a strong association with bedtime. But why? Warm or cold, is there any good reason why we should be drinking a glass of milk at bedtime?

It seems the simple answer is yes and – not for one good reason – but for several good reasons.

A glass of milk contains a healthy dose of an amino acid called tryptophan which is renowned for helping us sleep better. This is great in of itself, but tryptophan also converts into serotonin (the happy hormone) which has the effect of increasing the amount of melatonin in your body, and melatonin helps regulate your sleeping and waking cycle.

So, this World Milk Day, why not support the dairy industry and your sleep in one glass…all the while milking the positive effects for your sleep.
